Fortaleza

This is a picture gallery of Fortaleza and the beaches close by. There are extraordinary crafts in the state of Ceará and I found the dunes in the wild, deserted beaches overwhelmingly beautiful. Well, see for yourself...just click on the thumbnails and enjoy!  If you go, do not miss a stretch of delightful bars and restaurants called Praia de Iracema, which culminates in a superb forró dance house called Pirata Bar. We took photos of a cashew flower with the budding fruit (the nut is the first thing to appear), a sapoti, and several beautiful bromeliads at a street market. The gorgeous theater came from Europe and was put together in place. The baskets and rug are all made from buriti palm fronds. To shop for such goodies and cashew nuts, visit the "feira de artesanato" at the Centro de Turismo, the handicrafts market on the beach, and the new central market downtown.

We recently found out that Fortaleza has a vast fan club out there. One such person went ahead and created a site about it, appropriately named Visit Fortaleza. We love the market pictures!
